How to Get to Cozumel
Fly to Cozumel
Cozumel International Airport (CZM) welcomes direct flights from major U.S. cities like Miami, Houston, and Dallas, as well as domestic flights from Mexico City and Cancún. If you’re arriving internationally, you may need to connect through a major Mexican hub before reaching Cozumel.
Ferry from Playa del Carmen
For those travelling from the mainland, the most common route is the ferry from Playa del Carmen. The high-speed ferry takes about 45-minutes and runs frequently throughout the day. Once you arrive at Cozumel’s ferry terminal, you’ll find taxis and rental services to explore the island.
From Cancún
Though there is no direct ferry from Cancún to Cozumel, travellers can take a bus or taxi/private shuttle to Playa del Carmen (approximately 1-hour) and then hop on the ferry to the island.
Best time to visit Cozumel
Weather
Cozumel enjoys warm, tropical weather year-round, with average temperatures ranging from 23°C to 31°C (74°F to 88°F). The dry season, from December to April, offers the most pleasant conditions for outdoor activities, while the wet season, from May to November, sees higher humidity and occasional tropical storms. Hurricane season runs from June to November, with the highest risk between August and October.
Tourist peaks and cruise ships
High season in Cozumel coincides with winter in North America, from December to April, when visitors flock to escape the cold. The island is also a major cruise ship hub, meaning certain areas can get crowded when multiple ships dock simultaneously. If you prefer a quieter experience, plan your trip to Cozumel Mexico during the shoulder months of May or November.

Best Things to Do in Cozumel
1. Snorkelling and scuba diving
Cozumel is world-famous for its coral reefs, part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System, the world’s second largest barrier reef. Various snorkel and dive spots skirt the southern half of the island, located within Cozumel Reefs Marine Park (Arrecifes de Cozumel National Park in Spanish). This area offers some fantastic diving and snorkelling opportunities. With crystal-clear waters and abundant marine life, it’s a must-visit for ocean lovers.
2. Relax at a Beach Club
For those who prefer to unwind, grab a day pass to one of Cozumel’s many beach clubs. Each club offers a slice of private beach lounging, dining and activities. Shop around for the one that best matches with your wishlist and budget. Beach clubs are ideal for a laid-back day by the sea with food, drinks, and entertainment included. We spent time relaxing and playing at Islands Beach Club (near the Westin and Hotel B Unique) and minutes from the airport.
3. Take a Jeep tour around the Island
Exploring the island of Cozumel by Jeep allows you to experience its natural beauty beyond the main tourist hubs. Drive along the scenic coastal roads, visit remote beaches, and stop at landmarks like the Punta Sur Eco Park, home to a historic lighthouse and a crocodile lagoon. There are some cenotes and Maya ruins on the island, but if these are real interest to you, make a trip to the ones on the mainland for a superior experience.

4. Enjoy Cozumel Carnival (seasonal)
If you’re visiting in February or early March, don’t miss festivities of Cozumel Carnival, Mexico’s oldest Carnival celebration (over 150-years). Expect lively parades, colourful costumes, and energetic street parties in the nights leading up to Fat Tuesday. The date changes each year relative to Easter. Check the calendar well in advance of your trip and book ahead, as flight and accommodation prices skyrocket the closer you get to the date.
5. Day Trips to Playa del Carmen and the mainland
From Cozumel, you can easily take a ferry to Playa del Carmen and explore mainland attractions like cenotes (natural sinkholes) and Maya ruins. These excursions provide a mix of outdoor exploration and cultural experiences. Check this guide for things to do on the mainland Yucatán Peninsula.
6. Swim with whale sharks (seasonal)
Between June and September, you can join a tour from Cozumel to swim with whale sharks near Isla Mujeres, further north. These gentle giants migrate through the region, offering a once-in-a-lifetime wildlife encounter. See here for my full guide to swimming with whale sharks in Mexico.

7. Eat everything!
Cozumel has some wonderful foodie-approved eateries to discover on your trip. From casual to high-end, traditional Mexican cuisine to fresh, ocean-to-table seafood. Here are a few of our favourites: Buccanos, La Cocay, The Original Lobster House, Xul-Ha at Hotel B Unique, La Choza and Pancho’s Backyard.
8. Sunset watching
Cozumel is a fantastic location for sunset lovers. Despite being on Mexico’s east coast, the slither of Caribbean between the west side of the island and the mainland provide a stunning sunset view. There are plenty of waterside bars, restaurants and beaches to enjoy the photogenic sundowns. There are also various sunset cruises for an enjoyable end of the day on the water.
