If there is a street art heaven, this might be it – Wynwood, Miami. Wall to wall splattered, stroked and sprayed with luminous colour in countless styles. My husband was slightly alarmed by the neighbourhood I appeared to be directing him into as we drove the Miami streets. Maybe I could have found a safer route, but Google Maps doesn’t have a car-jacking warning, so we crossed our fingers for no red lights as our surroundings made us increasingly uneasy. At the end of that unnerving road is one of the places I was most looking forward to visiting on our Florida road trip-Wynwood Walls.
Wynwood Walls
The brainchild of real estate mogul Tony Goldman, Wynwood Walls is the epicentre of what has become an arts district; a showcase of some of the world’s best urban artists co-curated by Goldman’s collaborator, art dealer Jeffrey Deitch. With the success of the Walls, the project expanded far beyond the initial hub. A once derelict warehouse suburb has been gentrified by a thriving creative community who moved in and transformed abandoned spaces and blank walls. Let me take you on a tour of some of my favourite pieces in this open-air gallery of Miami street art.
