The USA is a vast nation, encompassing 50 diverse States, offering a unique blend of history, culture and landscapes for a curious traveller to explore. From the breathtaking natural beauty of it’s National Parks like Yellowstone, to the vibrant energy of iconic cities like New Orleans or Los Angeles. There’s no shortage of places to explore – to cover it all would take a lifetime! However, after 8-years living in the U.S. and 38 States travelled, we feel pretty qualified to offer you our 12 best States to visit in the USA.
Best States to Visit in the USA
Of course, the USA is the third largest country in the world by total area and spans approximately 9.8 million square kilometres (~3.8 million square miles). This immense land area allows for a remarkable variation that sets it apart from other nations. There are countless unique and unforgettable experiences for travellers. Let’s delve into the top U.S. States that should be on every traveller’s radar, and why they are {IMHO} must-visit destinations.

1. California
The Golden State is one of superlatives. The most National Parks, the highest AND lowest point in the 48-contiguous States, home to both the world’s tallest known trees and biggest trees by volume… the list goes on. Nature enthusiasts will revel in the 9 National Parks complimented by more than 280 State Parks capturing stunning coastlines, volcanic features, majestic forests and vast deserts.
Urban explorers will be captivated by the iconic cities of Los Angeles and San Francisco, known for their rich cultural heritage, world-class dining, and vibrant arts scenes. Then you have smaller cities of note such as Palm Springs and San Diego. Oh, and did I mention wine country–the Sonoma and Napa Valleys? There is no doubt that if you were only to visit one State in the US, California should be it. Get our Golden State road trip itinerary here!

2. New York
New York State residents will hate me for saying this, but New York City really is the finest attraction the Empire State has to offer. The proverbial melting pot of cultures, offers a dynamic mix for travellers. It’s history and culture has been so globally pervasive, the rest of the State doesn’t hold a candle to it.
We can talk about the Finger Lakes and Adirondack Mountains, but compared to California, these natural attractions are hardly competition. The metropolis of New York City really holds up the State on its own as far as this list is concerned.
The benefit to you, dear traveller, is you can spend your entire time tackling the city, overflowing with iconic landmarks like Times Square, Central Park, and Broadway. You don’t have to feel any FOMO over upstate New York except maybe Niagara Falls (but the Canadian side of the Falls is better–see this post)!

3. Utah
If you’re surprised to find Utah on my list of best States to visit in the USA, don’t be. The Beehive State is a treasure trove of outdoors experiences. Take in 5 absolutely stunning National Parks, 8 National Monuments, dabble in over 40 State Parks and explore Navajo sites like Monument Valley, then tell me this is not a State beyond compare!
From the sculpted landscapes of Arches National Park to the hoodoos of Bryce Canyon. Reflect over the monumental Land Art along the remote banks of the Great Salt Lake or go scuba diving in a hot spring. Heard of Canyonlands National Park? It’s like a second Grand Canyon and that is no exaggeration.

4. Arizona
Like Utah above, Arizona’s arid landscapes are fascinating and awe-inpsiring, although a little more widely known. There is no opportunity to visit Arizona that I would turn down. From hot air ballooning over the Sonoran Desert outside Phoenix, gaping over the Grand Canyon or hunting down an ethereal slot canyon – Arizona is top notch.
Art and culture intermingle inextricably with nature here. From the artsy enclave of Sedona to the historic “wild west” town of Tombstone. Arizona offers a mix of outdoor adventures, history and cultural experiences. Architecture-lovers should head for Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin West and the Mid-Century goodness of Scottsdale.
Meanwhile, hipsters meet in trendy Tucson, a UNESCO-designated City of Gastronomy with easy access to the Saguaro National Park. Discover the Painted Desert, hike to the rocky Wave and discover the Arizona’s Navajo heritage. Arizona is one U.S. State we cannot get enough of!

5. Hawai’i
Hawai’i is like nowhere else in the USA, because historically and geographically it isn’t part of North America. The archipelago is 3,200-km (2,000-mi) southwest of the contiguous United States in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Known for its stunning beaches, lush rainforests, and volcanic landscapes, the islands offer a perfect blend of relaxation and adventure.
Each island is somewhat distinct providing varied opportunities for surfing, snorkelling, hiking, cycling and exploring Polynesian culture. Whether you’re looking to unwind on the beach, embark on thrilling outdoor activities, or immerse yourself in local traditions, Hawaii is a tropical island dream destination.

6. Florida
The Sunshine State has a reputation built on its sandy beaches, trailing islands, Latin-American cultural influence, and family-friendly attractions. From the magical world of Disney in Orlando to the trendy South Beach Art Deco District of Miami, Florida offers a diverse range of experiences for travelers of all ages.
Nature enthusiasts should explore the 3 National Parks including the unique ecosystem of the Everglades, coral reefs and coastal beauty of Biscayne, and the incredible Dry Tortugas. Go airboating on the swamps and snorkel with manatees in the springs.
History and literary buffs can visit the historic sites of St. Augustine and explore Hemmingway’s Home in Key West. Science geeks and space nerds (I use those words affectionately, because I am both) have NASA’s Kennedy Space Center at Cape Canaveral. Culture travellers should explore Miami’s art and food scenes without hesitation. Cover it all with my Florida road trip itinerary.

7. Alaska
Alaska “The Last Frontier” is for the wild, adventurous and curious among us. Second to California on the National Park count (it has 8), Alaska’s rugged terrain, coastal fjords and awe-inspiring glaciers are unmissable. Buckle up! This State offers unparalleled opportunities for outdoor adventures, such as whale watching, glacier hiking, and dog sledding.
Go bear spotting, flightsee around North America’s tallest peak, witness the aurora borealis (northern lights) and Alaska’s untamed beauty will leave you spellbound. Get my list of top things to do in Alaska here.

8. Washington
Washington State is a nature-lover’s paradise, with split personalities. In the west, enjoy its lush forests, picturesque mountains ranges and dramatic waterfalls. In the east, take in the high desert landscapes, scenic canyons of the Colombia River Valley and 20 wine-growing regions.
Once again, the locals are going to hate me for this! Every time I rave about Washington State they shush me in order to keep it on the down low. This highly underated State offers a mix of outdoor adventures, across 3 National Parks, 3 National Monuments and 140+ State Parks. Washington State has the most glaciers of the Lower 48 States, the epic (there’s no better word for it) Mount Rainer, incredible remnants of simmering Mount St Helens and much more.
Plus, the vibrant city of Seattle offers a central, urban base with gold rush history, cool architecture and an eclectic array of sights and dining experiences. Whether you’re an outdoor enthusiast, or just have a firm appreciation of nature’s beauty, Washington will impress.

9. Wyoming
The Cowboy State is another top US State to visit for “team outdoors”. I could not leave out Wyoming because it is home to one of the best National Parks in the USA, and it’s neighbouring Park is pretty special too. I’m talking, of course, about Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks. Like California, the dynamic nature of the landscape here render diverse geologic, hyrdologic and geothermal features for endless exploring. Plus cool wildlife spotting opportunities and excellent accessiblity by road and day hikes.
While these two Parks in the northwest of Wyoming are enough of a drawcard, there’s more… You’ve probably heard of world-famous ski resort, Jackson Hole–that’s in Wyoming. You might have seen pictures of Devil’s Tower National Monument–that’s in Wyoming. Whether you like to get out and be active, or take in the scenery through a paintbrush or camera lens, there’s endless natural beauty to capture here.

10. Louisiana
Louisiana is a State steeped in history, layered with cultural influences and hot with tempting culinary delights. Sightseers should explore the vibrant streets of New Orleans, with its renowned music scene, historic architecture, and world-famous cuisine. From the iconic French Quarter to the Garden District, you’ll sometimes feel like you’ve left the US entirely. Festivals like Mardi Gras and Jazz Fest are worth marking in your calendar too!
Like NYC, New Orleans alone is enough to get Louisiana attention on this list of top States to visit in the USA. However, there’s more to do outside the Big Easy. Learn about the sugar industry, cash crops and slavery through visits to former plantations along the Mississippi River. Get a feel for Cajun (Louisiana Acadian) culture and go gator spotting on a swamp tours. Whether you’re a foodie, musicophile or history enthusiast, Louisiana’s vibrant sub-cultures and flavoursome cuisine offer a sensory journey not to be missed.

11. Colorado
The Centennial State is another natural paradise waiting to be explored. Best known for its majestic Rocky Mountains, Colorado offers endless opportunities for hiking, skiing and mountain biking. The 38th State has 4 National Parks, 9 National Monuments and 42 State Parks. Mountain resort towns like Breckenridge, Vail and Aspen are names synonymous with snow sports. While Boulder, Estes Park and Colorado Springs are hiking and rock climbing bases.
For culture and cuisine explore Denve and the wine-growing regions (officially, American Viticulture Regions or AVAs) in Grand Valley and The West Elks. Turn further southwest, and find your way to the mining town turned artsy enclave of Durango. This is a great base to discover the archealogical wonders of Mesa Verde National Park. Whether you’re seeking adrenaline-pumping activities or mountain vistas with a dose of culture, Colorado provides and escape for a variety of travellers.

12. Texas
Disclaimer: I have only seen a tiny slither of Texas so far. I have long written an itinerary for a big road trip, but haven’t had the right timing to pull it off. This recommendation is mostly based on my extensive research and feedback from other travellers.
The Lone Star State embodies the spirit of the Wild West, with its vast prairies, rugged canyons, and cowboy culture. Texas’ vibrant cities, like Austin, Dallas and Houston, offer a mix of live music, world-class dining (Texas BBQ anyone?) and cultural attractions. Explore the trendy, creative scene of Austin, or the historic sights of San Antonio including The Alamo.
Outdoor enthusiasts can hike the rugged landscapes of the State’s two National Parks: Big Bend and Guadalupe Mountains, supplemented by 77 State Parks. Alternatively, relax on the sandy shores of the Gulf Coast or cool off with a leisurely float down one of the State’s rivers.
Each of these States offers a range of attractions and experiences, on a big scale, that cater to a wide variety of travellers. Whether you’re seeking outdoor adventures, cultural immersion or simply relaxation, these states have something for everyone. Have some thoughts on my selection of best States to visit in the USA?
